THE STORY OF RED ONION AND THE GOLDEN FISH

Once upon a time, in the small vilage in WestSumatra, there was a widow who had a daughter
and  step daughter.
The step daughter,s name was Red Onion.
She had become an orphaned at a young age. Her
mother passed away when she was a young girl
while her father passed away short time later. Red
Onion grew up to be a very beautiful girl with good
manners. She too became a very hard worker.
Garlic, the widow,s blood daughter was
complete opposite of Red Onion. Although She
was pretty, she lacked in manner and character.
She was very lazy girl.
Both the Widow and Garlic treated Red
Onion like a slave. When The Widow was out
to the market, Red Onion was ordered to clean
the house. Her other duties were cooking and
washing. During the meal time, Red Onion only
ate the leftovers. In the mean time, Garlic use
most of her time playing and derssing her self up.
If Red Onion even made a little mistake,
she would be beaten.
Red Onion would run to the back yard
of the house sit by the pond and cry . The pond
was a rememberance of her father.
One day Red Onion felt tired and hungry,
she sat by the pool and thoughfully about her life.
Suddenly she heard a voice calling out her.
“Who is that? Show your self.” She said frightenly
“I am here Red Onion, inside the pond,
right in front of you.” The voice said.
Red Onion stared inside the pond. She was
surprised even more because she saw a big golden
fish emerging from the water.
“Was it you who called my name?” She tumbled.
“Yes I did Red Onion, please don,t be afraid.
I just want to be your friend.” Replied Golden Fish.
Red Onion starred at the shiny Golden Fish
with amazement. His scales shone so beautiful.
After
that day Red Onion never felt lonely again. Her days
became so much more cheerfull. Everytime when Red
Onion felt hungry after her hard day ‘s work, she would
call the Golden Fish with a special song taught to her.
 Dear Golden Fish, Golden Fish,
 The Golden magical Scaly Fish,
 Show me your glittery eyes,
Your presence is my only wish,
 Red Onion Calling you out,
 La...lala...la...la...lala!
Golden Fish would come up and grant her
all wishes. Red Onion would only ask Golden Fish
for a very delicious lunch. Nothing more.
Meanwhile, the Widow and Garlic felt suspicious
when they saw how much Red Onion had changed.
She became so fit and her body was no longer thin.
They even more surprised when they found that Red
Onion never touched the leftover meal.
One day, when the sun was almost down, Red
Onion sat by the pool and called  Golden Fish who
immediately came to surface.
“Beautiful Red Onion, what do you wish?” Asked
Golden Fish.
“My dear Golden Fish, I just want to eat, I am
feeling very hungry.” She said. Suddenly a delicious
meal appeared in seconds.
Little did Red Onion realize, Garlic had silently
followed her to the pond  after she had discover that
Red Onion did not eat her leftovers meal.
“Aha,..no wonder she never touched my leftover
meal. Beware Red onion!!” She cursed her with anger.
One day The Widow ordered Red Onion to go
to the market to buy goods.
Silently The Widow and garlic went to the pond
in the back yard.
“Come on Garlic, sing a song to call the magic
Golden Fish!” The Widow said impatiently. Garlic
nodded her head and started singing the song.
 Dear Golden Fish, Golden Fish,
 The Golden magical Scaly Fish,
 Show me your glittery eyes,
Your presence is my only wish,
 Red Onion Calling you out,
 La...lala...la...la...lala!
When Golden Fish appeared, Garlic quickly
caught him and shouted.
“Hey Golden Fish, give us gold and jewelry,
beautifull clothes an delicious meal!!”
Golden Fish was startled and tried to wriggle
free, but to no avail. He also kept silent and refuse
to grant their demands.
“Allright then. You will regret your self. Perhaps
your body can be very delicious meal.”They both
laughed sinisterly.
In the afternoon when Red Onion returned
from the market, she went to the pond  to see the
Golden fish. But he never appeared. Red Onion
sadly left the pond and went to the house.
She saw
The Widow and Garlic sitting with content.
“Red Onion, bring glasses of waters, we
are thirsty.” The Widow ordered.
“Oh, dear mother, that fish from our pond
was so delicious, wasn,t  it?” Said Garlic with an
evil smile. Red Onion became  shocked when she
heard her step sister’s words. Her eyes open widely
with pain when she saw Golden fish’s bone on the plate.
Red Onion,s heart was shattered. She imme-
diately ran to the pond holding the fish’s remains
in her arm. “My dear Golden Fish, forgive me for
leaving  you alone. How come they be so cruel! ”
Red Onion cried sadly. Suddenly the remains spoke.
“My beautiful Red Onion, don,t  be sad. I will
always be with you forever. Bury me and plant an
orange seed in my grave.” Golden Fish said. Red
Onion obeyed Golden Fish,s command.
The following day, a tree grew out of Golden
Fish,s grave. It grew with great speed and height.
The tree shone goldenly similar to Golden Fish’s
scales. The Widow and Garlic were astonished
when they saw it. People in the village gathered
and talked about it.
However It became  strange, when nobody
was able to pick the oranges from the tree.
One day a young handsome Prince and
his companions came to the village. They met The
Widow and Garlic. “Widow, my father is serious ill.
A wise man in our palace dreamt that he could be
cured only by this golden orange. However only the
true owner of this tree can pick them. Could you
help me, please?” Said the handsome prince.
“Indeed your highness. Do not worry, we are
the true owner.” The Widow said happily.
Under the villager,s eyes The Widow tried to pick the golden
oranges with no succes. Each time she tried to reach
them, the oranges would move further away. The
same thing also happened when Garlic tried her luck.
They both felt shame. The Prince pleaded. “Is there anybody here
who can pick these golden oranges. The person who
succesfully pick these oranges shall be rewarded. If the
person is male, I shall adopt him as my brother. If  female,
I will take her as my wife. “ Many people rushed and
tried to pick oranges, but no avail.
Suddenly the prince saw Red Onion from a
distance showing her face through the kitchen window.
The Prince fell for her the second he saw her natural
beauty and then asked.

“Beautiful girl, could you pick the golden oranges
for me, please?” He said hopefully. Red Onion was bent
over in embarrasment.

Red Onion picked the golden oranges very easily,
it seems as though all of the golden oranges came near
to her arms. This made the villagers very surprised. Even Garlic and The Widow.
“Oh, you are the real owner.” The Prince said happily.
In the end The Prince brought  Red Onion to his palace
and married  her. The King was succesfully cure by the golden
oranges. As Golden Fish had promised he magically move the
golden orange tree to the palace, so that he could remain with
Red Onion forever. Red Onion and the handsome prince lived
happily ever after.

That's the end of Red Onion....................
